| Black and Blue |
Last night, Gavin and I were curled up on the couch watching a movie. We were very relaxed. Probably a little drowsy as we had just finished supper. All of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye, I see movement! Running across the floor in front of the TV stand is a black and blue lizard. About 3/4 of the way to the end of the stand it stopped and looked at Gavin and I. I think we both jumped. Then the little black and blue guy ran into one of Gavin's toys!!
I could just see its little tail sticking out and I decided I had to act. My first thought was to grab a sheet or towel and throw it over the toy and lizard. I told Gavin to stay put on the couch and I crept into the kitchen (I didn't want to startle the lizard.) The first thing I spotted that I thought might work was a large plastic bag that some of Gavin's party favors were in. I grabbed it up off the kitchen counter and made my way back into the living room.
I took a look at Gavin's toy and could still see that blue tail sticking out. So I began to creep forward. (now you have to realize that I am really petrified. Adrenaline is at a high level. The fight or flight response is very strong and I really wanted to fly!!) As I began to close in on the toy containing the lizard, I sensed that he was about to move...I couldn't not let him escape...so I POUNCED. (bag first of course!) I slammed that bag right down on top of the toy and tried to seal the bottom against the carpet with my fingers. It was a few seconds before I could move (my heart was beating out of my chest and adrenaline was making me shake). I wasn't sure yet if I had managed to contain him. What terrified me the most was the potential for this thing touching me. AAAAGH!
Very slowly, I gathered together the end of the bag and then with one swift movement I flipped it up. Taking a quick peek into the bag, I spotted my little black and blue nemesis. I slammed the bag closed and held it as far from my body as I could. Still shaking, I turned and told Gavin that I got it and that I was taking it outside. Gavin's eyes were as big as saucers. He hadn't budged. I think he was in shock at how fast mom could move. I know I was.
I carried the bag outside, turned it upside down and shook it really hard. Finally, the little guy fell out and ran away as fast as possible. Oh boy was I glad to see him go. Letting him go wasn't what I had originally planned though. I considered smashing him with a big pot and tying him up in the bag and throwing him in the garbage can. Lucky for him...I'm not quite that mean. |
