| Finding the Right Fit |
Hey, what's your problem, Shrek, what you got against the whole world anyway, huh? (Donkey; Shrek) Look, I'm not the one with the problem, okay? It's the world that seems to have a problem with *me*! People take one look at me and go "Aargh! Help! Run! A big stupid ugly ogre!" They judge me before they even know me - that's why I'm better off alone... (Shrek; Shrek)
On top of everything else that has been going on lately, Darren and I have started the process of adopting a child. It is something that we have been wanting to do for awhile now. There are so many questions to answer...questions in our own minds, questions on forms, questions from others.
One of the biggest questions facing us is what kind of child would we like to adopt...Do we want a child with developmental problems? hearing problems? a boy? a girl? what age? an interracial adoption? If we do chose a special child from another race, how will others accept our child? We know it won't matter to us, but we realize we live in a real world and there will be all sorts of social issues to deal with.
As I have been wrestling with these questions, God has brought strangers into my life to share their own stories. Twice now this week I have had the occasion to talk with strangers about adoption and the changes it can bring into your life. Today I met the sweetest little girl. She has been adopted into a special family, but she had a hard life before that. She was a crack baby. She has some issues with speech problems and dysphagia, but other than that she seemed to be a normal, healthy, happy little girl. As I watched her play, I realized how easy it would be for me to love a child like her. My heart strings were pulled and God reminded me again that whatever issues faced our new child and our expanded family that He would be there to bind us together.
We are looking forward to an interesting future. We still have many questions (don't all parents) and we are continuing to search for answers. More and more we see the hand of God at work moving us forward in this process. Please be in prayer for our family and the special child that will one day be joining us.
If you have anything you would like to share about adoption or raising a child of a different race, please feel free to post a comment. We love to hear your stories and your own journey of faith. |
