| Do you dream? |
It's never too late to believe in your dreams.
Last night I had a rare occurrence. I couldn't sleep. It took me a little longer than usual to fall asleep, and I woke up (wide-eyed) at 4:30. I figured it was better for Heather if I got up instead of flopping around and waking her up. She was sleeping good. That's another rare occurrence, but that's a different story. I thought if I watched a movie I could fall back asleep on the couch. Good thought, but I chose the wrong movie. How could I fall asleep watching a baseball movie, "The Rookie"?
Jim Morris is a high school teacher and baseball coach. His days of playing ended in the minor league due to injuries. As a relaxation tool, Jim "pitches" to a metal fence at night when he thinks no one else is watching. His catcher calls him out one day after practice to throw some balls to him. The catcher egged his coach on to bring on his heat. Little does Jim know that his catcher would soon turn this "secret" on him. After losing a game, the team is getting chewed out by Jim. The team knows his passion to pitch and his dream to make it to the Big League. For motivation, Jim makes a deal with his team. If they win district, he would go try out for a Major League Baseball team. Guess what? The team wins district and forces Jim to keep his side of the bargain. Jim goes to the try outs and impresses the scouts by throwing 98mph fastballs every single time. The rest of the movie is Jim's journey through the minor league system and eventually he gets called up to the Big League. His dreams come true. Though, it didn't happen overnight. He had people doubting his abilities. His teammates laughed at him. He was causing a hardship on his family by being gone for a long time and only bringing home $600 a month. He almost didn't go. He was putting his family first, but his wife helped him change his mind. Their 8 year old son had spent the last two days enduring the sun and rain to watch his daddy do something no one else believed was possible. His son is his dad's biggest fan. Jim's son had faith in his daddy's dream. Jim owed it to his son to try. The journey was hard and discouraging. Along the way, Jim's wife was always supportive and encouraging. Jim started to believe in himself after surviving several failures and set backs. Jim's dream came true, but he earned it.
So what's my point? My point is it's okay to dream. Just don't expect it to be handed to you on a silver platter. God gives us all dreams or visions. These are our goals. It's up to each one of us to put our feet in front of the other and make it a reality. God will give us tools and other ways to help our dreams come true. All we got to do is start down that dark scary road. All we got to do is draw our strength from the ones we love. All we got to do is etch one thing on our brain: Our biggest fan is God himself. He will stand in the hot sun or the blowing wind just to be able to be by our side. The day will come when we get the call that tells us our dream is coming true. You call home and tell your biggest fan. He's excited for you and cheers you on. Even if what you think your dream is doesn't come true, don't worry. Your fan will still be excited and will cheer you on to better things.
Something that I've realized is I couldn't tell you what my dream is. I've always flown by the seat of my pants and played it all by ear. How do I know if I'm getting close to my dream or not? What will Gavin think of me in ten years? Will I be boring because I don't know what I'm doing? Or, will I become his biggest fan by knowing what I want? He all ready wants to be like me. I want to see if I can become a better man for him. I got a lot to think about. That's what happens when I can't sleep. I realize I need to be dreaming.
Blame this long boring blog on G. It's his fault!!! He's in a spot where he has to rethink his vision and dreams. One thing I'll say. Don't compromise on the gifts God has given you. Dream big and follow what you believe is right. As long as you try and do something about it, you will never go wrong. You go wrong when you fail to do.
So what's your dream? |
