| Gavin and his love for trains |
What magic lies behind the massive, steam-puffing, metal beast of a train and little children? Is it the way the trains tower over cars and trucks? Is it the thunderous roar as the train races past on rails of metal? Is it the shear power the engines are able to use? Is it the song of the whistle that calls children to come to the train? Whatever the magic or mystery is, it captivates a child. And in my case, it captivates Gavin.
Thomas the Tank Engine is a favorite guest in our household. Gavin has several DVDs that he watches every once in a while. He has several tank engines and track based off of the Thomas Train series. I bet Gavin has at least five version of train engine Thomas. He has a good collection of Thomas's friends as well. Gavin has a special friend that helps him with his collection. When he's interested in playing with his trains, then that's everything he can focus. The magic for him doesn't end with just toys. He has a passion for the real McCoy.
That passion is fueled by where we live. In order to go to town whether to Little Rock or to Bryant, we have to cross the train tracks. It is now turned into a habit that when we cross the train we look hard for a train. Sometimes there would be a train (sometimes two trains) stopped just close to the railroad crossing. Whoever is driving would take a detour down a side street so Gavin can see the massive trains up close. His eyes would go big and his jaw drops. It's hard to tell when I'm driving, but I think he drools as well. The car would slowly pass the engine and the train cars. Gavin seeing that the trains were getting out of view would request another trip around the block.
The best part is when the train is actually moving. The other day we were going to Wal-Mart when the lights came flashing on. It was calling and shouting "Hey! Idiot! Stop! There be a train a coming!!!" On this particular night, we were the first car in line to stop. Boy was Gavin in for a treat. The whistle starting blaring its song. The rumbling of the engine could be felt. Then BOOM! The train was on top of us and going fast. Gavin's head almost got a whip-lash because the train came so fast. His head went from left to right at the same time dropping his jaw and just going wow.
Whatever the magic is, I hope it lasts. The magic is fun, and I'm excited everytime I see a train. Why? Simple. It has such an affect on Gavin that the magic spills over. Train whistle keep blowing and blowing. May your steam never get cold.
